• 1e opdracht: 'Weird Science' - maak perfecte mooie man of vrouw of perfect lelijke man of vrouw die een interessante handeling doet, naar aanleiding van je NRC Synopsis. Samengesteld uit stukken foto's die voor 1 keer van internet mogen komen
voor deze opdracht staat 1 week.

9 februari
• uitleg over authenticiteit, associatie en kunstmatigheid
• voorbeelden verschillende soorten collagetechnieken
• studenten presenteren eerste werken en geven naam aan hun character
• 2e opdracht: teken je character met potlood op papier van drie verschillende kanten

16 februari
• start 3e opdracht: maak 1 van de de drie perspectieven van je character na in Photoshop. Scan textures en maak vullingen. Het character mag niet meer uit lijnen bestaan maar uit textuurvlakken. voorbeelden mee.

• klassikale viewing resultaten
• uitleg show don't tell
• Pixelation/idee voorbeelden mee van o.a. Pez & OK GO
• start 4e opdracht: pixelation animatie in premiere: 30 seconden.
voor deze opdracht staat 3 weken. Beginnen met klein storyboardje om problemen te voorkomen, potlood op papier, volgende week af. Bedenk alvast de middelen. Bedenk dat we er een titel over gaan zetten en dus daar rekening mee houden met de shoot.

Hi everybody! I made a planning for the first assignments I am going to give you this semester. Of course, I will explain things much more thoroughly in class, but here is what to expect... i am looking forward to becoming really good together, I hope you feel the same!

Program lessons Martin Draax, 2nd semester 1st year 2011/12

Februari 2: 1st lesson
• introduction of the way of working in my lessons. Explaining the 8-folded path, the criteria for reviewing the work. Explaining the importance of sketching.
• Showing a selection of my own work
• 1st assignment: 'Weird science' - make the perfect man or woman, or the most ugly you can think of and let him/her do an interesting action. The NRC Synopsis is leading for this. This will be a collage of pictures, stolen from the Internet. This will be the only time stealing from the internet is allowed.
for this assignment we reserve one week
• make clear that presentation of the work at the final assessment day has to be good and will cost money. No good presentation, no assessment.

Februari 9
• Explanations about authenticity, association and artificiality
• Examples of different kinds of collage techniques
• 2nd assignment: Draw you character with pencil in your logbook, from three sides
we reserve for this assignment one week.

Februari 16
• Start 3rd assignment: work out one of the perspectives of your character in Photoshop. Scan textures and fill fields with it. The character should not consist of lines anymore but of textured fields.
• Show examples of this
For this assignment we reserve 2 weeks: we use the holiday.

March 1
• classical viewing of the results
• expanation of the concept 'show don't tell'
• Pixelation/idea examples by Pez and OK GO and others
• Beginning 4th assignment: Pixelation animation in Premiere: 30 seconds
We use 3 weeks for this. We start with a small storyboard, made with pencil in the logbook. Think about the possibillities. Understand we will impose a moving title over the beginning in a later stage.

Vul een doos met het thema 'This is me'. Alles mag erin: objecten, foto's, tekeningen, prints, geluiden (als het maar niets buiten de doos nodig heeft, dus bijvoorbeeld geen cd's, als die een apparaat buiten de doos nodig hebben).
De doos mag niet groter zijn dan een schoenendoos (ongeveer 20x30x10cm) en moet mee op de fiets naar Buurse. Houdt er bij het vullen van de doos goed rekening mee dat je in Buurse een korte presentatie (3 tot 6 minuten) houdt voor het hele gezelschap, aan de hand van de inhoud van de doos. De belangrijkste eis daarbij is, dat wie de presentatie heeft gezien, jou niet meer vergeet.

Me in a box (EN)
Fill a box with the theme 'This is me'. Use whatever you want: objects, photographs, drawings, prints, sounds (the content of the box must be self supporting, so CDs, for instance, are not allowed when they need a machine outside of the box to play it).
The box should not exceed the size of a shoebox (approx 20x30x10cm) and has to be taken with you on the bike trip to Buurse. When filling the box, be well aware that with the contents of the box, you are going to give a short presentation (3-6 minutes) in Buurse for the whole group. The most important requirement is, that the presentation makes you unforgettable for everybody in the audience.

2/3 : How To Archive Your Work In Akinet

It's that time of the year again. Archiving your work of this last semester in Akinet. Below you will find all titles of this semester's 2nd and 3rd year assignments. You will use these exact titles for your subject(s). Find these in the ACD Mutual blog and use some of the assignment text for a description. exactly in order for the data base to find similar subjects and put them together. First add a new subject (see image below) and fill it in (written in bold) Than write a subscription. Choose only your best work. Don't upload everything. Try to make slideshows of series instead of uploading them one by one. Make sure to keep to the maximum width and height (700 x 600 pixels) also when it concerns Quicktime movies. Use the H264 codec for compression. DO NOT USE NAMES OF TEACHERS!

You will have to add subjects first in order to upload any objects. You can edit subjects later. Go to my subjects and click on the 'i' icon. Or change subjects via the pulldown menu in your upload. Make sure you control your uploads in both views! Take care of a good subscription of your personal upload.

Het is weer zover. We vragen je om je werk van het afgelopen semester in Akinet te archiveren. Maak een keuze uit je beste eindresultaten. Archiveer NIET alles! Test your Green Light Presentation with Johan and me on Friday January 20. Protocol: Team up with 3 other students, so make a group of 4 students. Each group has one hour, for the 4 individual presentations and following analysis. Each presentation can take max 7 minutes. Be sure to have your presentation ready, we do not look at half done presentations (of course you can change things later). Johan and I will look at the content, the way it is presented on the screen and the way you present it live.
React as a group of 4 to this post here in the blog, not in Akinet, and apply for the first free hour, so no holes in the schedule: 9.30-10.30, 10.30-11.30, 11.30 -12.30, break, 13-14, 14-15, 15-16, 16-17.
And I repeat: we do not look at bits and pieces, we will discuss and tweak, but complete presentations only.

3 : iPad Magazine Grid

Design a grid for a magazine for iPad. End result in PDF (iPad size).

Pick five important magazine articles, copy their content (OCR text) and re-arrange it for iPad format (portrait and landscape). Make a homepage with parts of all 5 articles and at least one follow up page with one complete article.

Do this in InDesign and remember - and practise - what we discussed about:

– lettertypes

– type sizes

– leading

– tracking (letter spacing)

– kerning

– alignments*

– upper and lower case

– grids

– typography hierarchy
– user interface hierarchy

– You can either choose to do an iPad version for an existing magazine or think up a new one

Do some research about magazines that already have an iPad version.

You can try this yourself at home. Try the Peacekeeper Benchmark Test. Now what does this all mean? Chrome is the fastest browser but also best in performance on a Mac. Safari comes in second and is about 10% faster than FireFox which means if you were working in FireFox for about ten hours you could have been doing something else 1 hour earlier if you had browsed in Safari or Chrome ..

3: Poster for an exhibition

The (Temporary) Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam is holding a retrospective exhibition of your favourite artist from February - May 2012. Create an identity for this exhibtion and showcase it on an A2 poster. Present on A3 format (or larger, if possible).

• First click on my group calendars, than click on the calendar icon of the group you want to make an appointment in.

4. Webportfolio

Next thursday, november 17th, 13h30, we will have a group meeting about the webportfolio. We start with the whole group, evaluating the designs of people that are in stage 3 (see previous post), then the stage 2 people. Stage 1 people can use these presentations to explore possibilities. So the people in stage 3 and 2 can leave when their designs are reviewed, and we will end with only the stage 1 people. Everybody: please bring everything you did so far.

2: Skin

In all visual disciplines is that what we see largely determined by its exterior: the skin.

1. Assignment  
I ask you to investigate the aspects of the theme skin and develop a conceptional idea (2- or 3-dimensional) within the borders of communication design.

2. Analysis 
What kind of functions, features and associations regarding skin can you find? This involves also such things as communication, construction, wear, aging, protection, camouflage, etc… Make the fullest possible inventory of all the functions, features and associations of skin that you can imagine, try to find aspects as useful as possible. Categorize what belongs to what and under what title can you bring them together. To what are these issues also related to, like: flora, fauna, lifeless things, people? What are the differences? Try to analyse as clear as possible.

Keep focussed on that single aspect and make a mind map from this aspect as starting point.

Colors exist because the light. The natural source of light is the sun. Conscious perception, observation, is based on who we are.
Is the perception of sunlight a natural occurrence ?

After the Color and Photo-interpretation of the book of our most favorite author : Three colors and one Photo (on 20x20 cm) firstly we do a study on primary and secondary colors. We come back later on the interpretion assignment.

For the assignment of the color range we use couache (plakaatverf) of the brand Talens : process yellow, -blue and -red. On the size 10x10 cm, we create the primary colors and secundary colors (orange, green and purple). The secondary colors must be optically exactly in between the primary colors.

This is very practical work, or not ?

On thursday November 3 you present photo documentation - 3 to 5 photo's - of a book exhibition, as if the exhibition took place before that date. Pick one book with your group, and all use this book only.

- the setting, environment, light, underground surface,
- the position of the visitor (walk, sit, stand, touch, ...)
- the number of copies you use

Amsterdam based publisher Business Contact will release the Dutch translation of ‘Enchantment’ by Guy Kawasaki in mid-November and is asking you to design the front cover.

Bij Uitgeverij Business Contact verschijnt medio november het boek Betovering van marketingexpert Guy Kawasaki. Kawasaki was lang Chief Evangelist bij Apple, en vertelt ons in dit boek over het proces waarmee je mensen in vervoering brengt over een product, dienst, organisatie of idee. Can you make out the usual suspects - letter combinations that seem to clash more frequently than others, and those that seem too gappy?

The charity's founder, Iete Hartman, will visit us personally at the AKI on Monday, October 17th 2011, at 13:30. She will have a look at the designs we selected from our Sala Kuchi Kuchi identity development and - probably - pick her favourite.

2: The adventures of Mrs Soul

Next workshop, from October 5 - 7, you are going to make an interactive animation (15 - 45 seconds). 'Interactive' means, that somewhere in the animation the viewer has to make a decision (by clicking) that defines the flow and ending of the story. The title of the animation will be 'The adventure of Mrs Soul and the decision you have to make'. So your story has to fit that title (eg: what does your Mrs Soul look like?).
Prepare for this workshop:
- Make a story with two different endings and a interactive decision-moment.
- Choose an animation style for the story: with photography&stop-motion, or paper-drawing&scanning, or computer-drawing (in Flash, or other software).
- Make a story board, with the key moments in text and images.
- Think of the time constraints: it must be made in a short period, so do not make it too complex (=not too much drawings, not too complex sounds, ...).

3: Mood reader interface (2)

This is the original assignment:
Take the existance of a mind reading device as a given fact. The device can detect the level of attention (0 - 100%) and the level of agreement (from strongly disagree to strongly agree) of every person in a room.
Make a product for large meetings (around a table, 10 to 50 persons). The product shows the levels of attention and agreement for every person in the meeting, in real time, so you can see it change during the meeting. It shows it per person (and linked to the person), but also as an aggregate for the whole group.
Don't mind the current state of technical affairs, everything is possible: You can also use future stuff like hologram or monitor paint in your product.
Work in duo's: You are advised to do the asignment together with another student, but if you don't want to team up it is allowed to work alone.
This is what came out the first meeting:
- start with a good analysis: what is the input, what is the use of the output (the diagram on the whiteboard)
- 50 persons is too much for a device that shows all individual aspects (as Christian pointed out), so we bring that down to 20 or so. But maybe you can also think how the device can work for very big groups.
- Think in options: the owner can adjust the device to his wishes.

Step 2, ready October 7:
Make a presentation that includes all aspects: the principle, the looks, the use, the name of the product.

(This is step 2 out of 3. The last step will be a campaign that introduces the product to the public. So: step 2 is to convince the client, step 3 is to convince the customers of the client.)

Apple’s 1983 Version of the iPhone

It wouldn’t be a huge exaggeration to say that the iPhone has changed the way we communicate. The iconic phone from Apple seems to be everywhere these days, but what most people don’t realize is that the company had the idea for a multi-use, touch-screen phone long before the original iPhone ever hit shelves. The year was 1983, and a creative Apple designer named Hartmut Esslinger decided to smoosh together a phone and a touch screen to invent the forefather of the iPhone

Esslinger, the same designer who came up with the Apple IIc (the company’s first portable computer), must have had the gift of future sight. He managed to predict the company’s most successful product 25 years before the technology actually existed to make it happen on a real-world scale. The early prototype was tethered to the wall via a cord, of course, making it slightly less useful and a whole lot less portable than the iPhone.

But like the eventual phenomenal portable phone, the early version featured a touch screen that could do some pretty amazing things. In one of these images of the early prototype, the user is writing a check and balancing his checkbook on the touch screen with a tethered stylus. In another, an on-screen keyboard takes the place of any type of physical buttons. It may not be just like the iPhone, but it is surprisingly similar for a phone that came more than two decades before the portable version.

Rituelen, gewoontes, herhaling. Het ritueel van winkelen, van reizen, bij religies. Herken je rituelen in je eigen leven, je omgeving? Welke? Wat zijn duidelijke kenmerken? Welke opeenvolgende stappen kun je onderscheiden? En welke voorwerpen horen er bij?

Opgave:
1. maak een zo nauwkeurig mogelijk schema van het ritueel. Onderzoek het ritueel door het een aantal keer vast te leggen, te meten, te omschrijven. Wat is het “scenario” van het ritueel? Wat zijn de belangrijkste momenten? En de volgorde?
2. registreer het ritueel met fotografie of film. En verzamel de voorwerpen die gebruikt worden en de objecten die bij het ritueel horen;
3. presenteer je bevindingen 2d/3d in een opstelling;

2: elementen 3d

In de lessen komen achtereenvolgens een aantal begrippen aan de orde. Na een beknopte inleiding gaat de student zelf het begrip onderzoeken.

1. schaal en verhouding.
a. neem een liggend A3 vel (liefst >80gr.). Teken hierop met pen en lineaal op gevoel een lijnenspel. Maak je vel 3d door selectief lijnen te snijden en te vouwen;
b. herhaal dit maar bedenk nu voor jezelf spelregels voor het zetten van de lijnen. [minimale onderlinge afstand, ritme of de richting van de lijnen etc.]. vergelijk de eindresultaten en herhaal zonodig met verschillende spelregels;
c. je hebt nu een abstract 3d-object. “Schaal” gaat ondermeer over de relatie van het object tot de mens. Is jouw model een vreemde fruitschaal / asbak of staat het voor een nog uit te voeren ontwerp van een skatepark. Illustreer jouw ideeen hierover aan de hand van tekeningen, fotomontage etc.

1. scale and proportion.

3: gastvrijheid

1. onderzoek (groep) het begrip “gastvrijheid”. Steden gebruiken het begrip steeds vaker in hun stadsmarketing. Maar wat bedoelen ze hier eigenlijk mee en wat betekent dit eigenlijk voor jou?
2. Neem een deel van je onderzoek nader onder de loep (individueel of kleine groep). Hoe zou je de mate van gastvrijheid in een stad kunnen meten? Probeer dit uit in de stad enschede.
3. Presenteer je onderzoek (beamer). Laat zien wat je uitgangspunt, aanpak en resultaat is. Je presentatie mag 'ruw' zijn. Denk na en geef aan of je onderdelen moet bijstellen of verfijnen en hoe je de uitkomsten gaat registreren.
4. Geef aan hoe je na de presentatie van de eerste try-out verder bent gegaan. Heb je je onderzoek specifieker gemaakt. Heb je het onderzoek nog een keer gedaan in een andere stad? Of herhaalt op een ander tijdstip. Kortom hoe heb je het verder aangepakt.
5. Geeft je onderzoek aanleiding tot conclusies waaruit verbeteringen ten aanzien van de gastvrijheid denkbaar zijn? Geef hiervoor een aanzet.
6. Wij hebben inmidels als groep veel materiaal verzameld rond “gastvrijheid”. De slotopgave is (als groep) te komen tot een afrondend product. Doe hiervoor een voorstel.

3: hospitality

1. research (group) “hospitality”. Cities tend to use the word more and more in there city-branding. But what do they mean by it? What does it mean to you?
2. Look at a part of your first research more closely (individual or small group). How can we measure the hospitality of a city? Try this in the city of Enschede.
3. Present you research (beamer). Show us your focuspoint, the way you did your investigation and the endresult. Reflect on your work so far and give us some insight on how you thgink you are goning to registrate the outcome.
4. Show us how you coninued after the presentation last week. Did you do your research more specific or did you repeat it somewhere else?
5. Did your research give us conclusions by which the hospitality can be improved. If yes, what are they?
6. As a group we now have a lot of material on the subject “hospitality”. The finalassignment is to come up with a proposal of how to deal with this as a group.

Imagine yourself ten years from now. Make a series of at least 5 photographs. Use every trick in the book. (aka 'I am in the News'). Turn those into a storytelling movie of max. 1 minute via Keynote, iMovie, Final Cut or AFX. The higher your resolution, the more you can do with them (panning, zooming, etc.). Add music and typography if necessary ..

From 21 to 23 september we are going to translate the boxpresentations into screenpresentations. It can be a very free translation, but do not make a completely new story. Before the 21st, collect everything you want to put on the screen: take pictures of your box, or the contents of your box, use the photo's made during your boxpresentation, etcetera ... And you can also collect sounds, motion, or stop motion. Bring your material digitally, as separate files. It does not need to be in a presentation file yet!

For inspiration look at the websites of the these photographers: Irving Penn, Barbro Anderson, Bart Oomes, Hedi Slimane, Raymond Meyer, Miep Jukkema, Horst P. Horst, Sarah Moon, Tim Walker. Most of them are fashion photographers (just like me). I like to work on stills, you can walk away and think them over, look for nice things to add, or create something for the scene. In short, let your inspiration flow, just go about and make beautifull scenes.

DOLLYZOOMPANTILT THROUGH THE KOSMOS – MICRO AND MACRO

Make an animation (30 sec) of a landscape in wich you use the camera in AE to move through. Any landscape will do; nature, urban or both. Make sure the viewer travels through the micro kosmos as well through the macro kosmos. Use all types of camera moves. Adding light will earn extra points.

September 16th we'll discuss your plan and sketches. The deadline is POSTPONED. New deadline is OCTOBER 14!

TIP:
1. Make sure your objects are 3D
2. Parent your camera to a null object will make it easier to move your camera.

Every third and fourth year student has a mentor. The mentor and the student have a one on one werkschouw every four weeks, to look back at the previous period and to prepare for the next period of four weeks. In a log on paper you write down what is discussed during the werkschouw.

3. Mood Reader Interface

Take the existance of a mind reading device as a given fact. The device can detect the level of attention (0 - 100%) and the level of agreement (from strongly disagree to strongly agree) of every person in a room.
Make a product for large meetings (around a table, 10 to 50 persons). The product shows the levels of attention and agreement for every person in the meeting, in real time, so you can see it change during the meeting. It shows it per person (and linked to the person), but also as an aggregate for the whole group.

Don't mind the current state of technical affairs, everything is possible: You can also use future stuff like hologram or monitor paint in your product.
Work in duo's: You are advised to do the asignment together with another student, but if you don't want to team up it is allowed to work alone.

Work out one idea in a complete and clear draft, that includes all aspects.

3. Key Scene

A 'key scene' everybody remembers, but most people cannot recall the story or even the name of the movie. Tagline: It TICKLES and TANTALIZES!

Opdracht: Maak een (sleutel)scene na uit één van je favoriete films. (Min 40 sec. max. 90 sec.) De set hoeft niet hetzelfde te zijn, wel het uitgangspunt en de intensie. Dus een VW Golf ipv. een Ferrari, 2 jongens i.p.v. een jongen en meisje mag ook, etc. De originele soundtrack blijft gehandhaafd. Zorg ervoor dat je de scene digitaal in de originele taal tot je beschikking hebt. Zodat je 'm op de computer frame voor frame kunt bekijken. Door het origineel goed te bestuderen kun je makkelijker je eigen draaiboek opstellen.

Let op:  Montage  + Licht  + Beelduitsnede  + Camera (standpunt, beweging, lens)  + Casting  + Regie (acteurs) + Dramaturgie  + Synchronisatie

Assignment: Reproduce a (key) scene of one of your favourite movies. (min. 40 sec. max 90 sec.). This movie should be be well known (and released on DVD). Copy drama and intension, photography, light and cutting, etc. Whereabouts can (sometimes) differ: a VW Golf instead of a Ferrari. Rip the scene from DVD and seperate video and audio track. Replace the video track (later) with your own reproduction which should be as exact as possible. Controlling is easy by placing it in an extra layer in Final Cut Pro.
• First study the origional frame by frame, make a storyboard
• Make a list of neccesary props, actors and other extras
• Start shooting
• Edit your movie according the original
• For special effects and colour correction use After Effects
• Pay attention to: Editing, Light, Photography, Camera (movement, point of view, lens), casting + direction, drama, lipsynchronisation.

Me in a box
Vul een doos met het thema 'This is me'. Alles mag erin: objecten, foto's, tekeningen, prints, geluiden (als het maar niets buiten de doos nodig heeft, dus bijvoorbeeld geen cd's, als die een apparaat buiten de doos nodig hebben).
De doos mag niet groter zijn dan een schoenendoos (ongeveer 20x30x10cm) en moet mee op de fiets naar Buurse. Houdt er bij het vullen van de doos goed rekening mee dat je in Buurse een korte presentatie (3 tot 6 minuten) houdt voor het hele gezelschap, aan de hand van de inhoud van de doos. De belangrijkste eis daarbij is, dat wie de presentatie heeft gezien, jou niet meer vergeet.

Me in a box
Fill a box with the theme 'This is me'. Use whatever you want: objects, photographs, drawings, prints, sounds (the content of the box must be self supporting, so CDs, for instance, are not allowed when they need a machine outside of the box to play it).
The box should not exceed the size of a shoebox (approx 20x30x10cm) and has to be taken with you on the bike trip to Buurse. When filling the box, be well aware that with the contents of the box, you are going to give a short presentation (3-6 minutes) in Buurse for the whole group. The most important requirement is, that the presentation makes you unforgettable for everybody in the audience.

4. Minor Typo in Motion (fka Forget the Rules)

De minor zal dit jaar iets anders in elkaar zitten dan andere jaren. De uiteindelijke opdracht zal per student anders geformuleerd worden en toegespitst op de individuele ontwikkeling van ieders studie. Belangrijk thema is in ieder geval Typografie in Beweging.

This year's minor will be an individual shaped assignment having each specific student in mind and Typography as our main theme.

Zoek tenminste 5 bereballegave titelsequenties van hetzij film of televisie.
Bijvoorbeeld de 'award winning' opening credits van Carnivale of het werk van Saul Bass. Zet ze achter elkaar in en formuleer je mening gedurende jouw presentatie op vrijdag 16 september.

Search for at least 5 supercool title sequences (cinema or television) or 'opening credits' f.i. like the 'award winning' HBO series Carnivale or the work of Saul Bass. Put them together and form an opinion and let us know during your presentation on Friday, September 16th.

Ook studenten die met bewegend beeld willen afstuderen wordt aangeraden deze minor te volgen.
Also students who already did a minor but want to graduate in 'Moving Images' are strongly advised to join this minor.

Na afloop is er gelegenheid om alvast een sneak preview van de overzichtstentoonstelling mee te maken. Ter afsluiting heffen we rond 17:30 samen het glas op de kersverse bachelors.
